Knowledge is Power

In this day and age, knowledge is the most powerful tool available for all of mankind. It also makes you wonder why don’t we highlight more of our youth that are accomplishing so much in school and in their communities.

Here in New Orleans we tend to focus on the negative actions of youth; our youth need to be empowered and encouraged more so they want to be successful.

We have youth here who are active in their communities in positive ways. Youth who help out in their households. Youth who are active in extracurricular activities and groups, alll while inspiring other youth to be their best and do their best.

I usually hear of these great teens by way of social media or word of mouth. Last week on social media, there was a story of a young teen who started her own business, a spa and boutique.  This same young lady is an author as well. The teen is Essynce Moore in Passaic, N.J.

Kimberly Smith, a senior at George Washington Carver High School, is not highlighted in the newspaper or on local news stations. She is an outstanding student. She is part of the school’s band and very active in her community. She is a youth leader at her place of worship. Kimberly also volunteers at a local library. She does all of this while maintaining 3.8 GPA.

Kimberly has received two scholarship offers so far from historically black colleges in Georgia. She is leaning towards becoming an elementary school teacher in the public school system or a lawyer. She is inspired by her 3rd grade teacher, Ms. Ellis. Kimberly will never forget how encouraging and dedicated Ms. Ellis was.

Talking with this young lady you would think she is older than she is. She speaks with grace and elegance.

Kimberly says she doesn’t know how to not give her all to anything she does. She wants to be the first in her family to graduate from college. She is looking forward being able to say, Yes, I live in a not so nice neighborhood. Yes, I attended public schools. Yes, I will accomplish all of my goals in life.

Kimberly hopes that in the future education will become the main priority in politics. Individuals with power will but their power to good use and fight for kids’ futures. Stop acting as if you want the best for children when you are only for yourself.

Throughout our entire conversation I was amazed that I was speaking with a 17-year-old. She quoted Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.”
This young lady is powerful. Her potential shines through. She will accomplish her dreams and more.
